Personal Statement

The intention of this creative practical project is to create the audible clothes. This idea came from my previous collections I mentioned, which were mostly inspired by music culture. However, it leaded me to raise a question that why the garment is always a secondary role in the performance? Instead, does it have any possibility that clothes could inspire music or any performance, in term of a wearable sound? Furthermore, base on this concept, the indigenous culture, which transfers garment to be part of instruments, would be a strong connection to my project.

Therefore, it would be a suitable concept to direct a fashion film as a final presentation of this project. The film of this project is a collaborated work, which unites fashion, music and dance. The main outline of this film is the sparkle created by the drummer and dancer’s movement. I divided this project into three parts: Fashion, Video and Music. Each part is involved in different artist, which is a challenge to me to integrate everyone’s opinion.

Firstly, in order to let dancer dance on the pole and aerial hoop smoothly, it's important to make some certain body parts bare (waist, legs and arms), which requires several try-outs to achieve. As a fashion designer, it's a big challenge for me to design a functional dress. In the beginning, I drew some sketches which made the design lack of creations. Therefore, I draped a rough dress directly on her to decide the outline of dress. After several times, I realized that in this case it's difficult to maintain function and fashion at the same time. Thus, we worked closer than before. I treated this as a breakthrough moment; the final garment, which can be disconnected by plastic buckles, was finished entirely by draping. On the other hand, the menswear made for the drummer is designed in terms of the movement of drumming. Because of the disconnected design, the garments gave the performer more possibilities to do complicated movement, meanwhile, multi-layer design and noisy fabrics successfully volume up the noise.

My intention of vibe is rough instead of clean. I separate the mood boards into film and fashion. In video one I intend to add a dynamic brush filter in the vide which coordinates the style of my design. Thus, post-editing is a relevantly important work to create the vibe I want. Regrettably, the video fails to achieve that due to little of editing. Therefore, I would say the video is still in progress. Still, I keep wondering if it’s time pressure that made the post-editing outcome is not what I expected? Thus, I tried to do it myself and realise it requires certain amount of time, professional abilities and much patient to nurture the outcome. It would be closer to my blueprint if I find another editor to have a fresh start on post-editing. After all, filmmaking and postproduction are different specialties and fields.

To sum up, although I have encountered many breakdowns, I’ve finished a lot of goals that I am very proud of. My journey still carries on after this. I believe I’ll finish the video by another way, and it’ll be something we can’t wait to show off.
